Near-real-time checks A dedicated scanning loop pulls and checks your mailboxes every few minutes — independent of the regular backup cycle — so a malicious mail is flagged while it still matters.

Dual-engine malware & virus detection Every message and attachment passes two independent engines: signature-based antivirus and rule-based pattern analysis that targets malicious techniques — macro droppers, obfuscated scripts, executables hiding inside documents, ransom-note content.

Phishing detection with an AI second opinion Link, header and sender-reputation heuristics flag suspected phishing; a self-hosted AI model reviews each flag to keep false positives down. The AI runs on our own hardware — your mail is never sent to any cloud AI service.

Spam & scam analysis Spam is scored using Exchange Online's own confidence data as an extra check on what actually reached the mailbox. Scam detection uses AI to spot social-engineering intent — CEO fraud, gift-card requests, invoice fraud — that contains no malicious link or attachment at all.

Alerts only when it matters Your admins are alerted on confirmed threats — verified malware, or phishing where someone is actually trying to extract something. Ordinary spam and newsletters never page anyone; everything is still visible in the dashboard.

AegisMailScanner is not included in any backup plan — it is its own product, purchased as an add-on. It builds on AegisBackup's mail backup as its foundation (we scan what we securely hold), so an active AegisBackup subscription is required. Common questions about the mail security add-on.
Is AegisMailScanner included in my backup plan?
No. AegisMailScanner is a standalone security product sold separately — backup plans never include it by default. It requires an active AegisBackup subscription as its foundation, because it scans the mail we already back up for you, but the security service itself is its own product with its own per-mailbox pricing.
Why do I need this when Microsoft 365 / Google already filter mail?
Their filters are good — and they still miss things, especially targeted phishing and social-engineering scams with no malicious link or attachment. AegisMailScanner is an independent second layer with different engines and different detection logic, checking what actually landed in the mailbox. The same defense-in-depth idea as running more than one lock on your front door.
Does my mail get sent to a cloud AI service?
Never. All scanning — including the AI models used for phishing review and scam detection — runs on our own servers in Sweden. No mail content is ever sent to any third-party or cloud AI service, and no person reads your mail. Alerts contain metadata only (sender, subject, date, reason) — never the content itself.
Can it delete legitimate mail by mistake?
Removal is deliberately hard to trigger. Only the Malware/Virus category can ever remove mail, only in Protecting mode, which requires a training period in flag-only Learning mode first plus a separate explicit consent from your own administrator. Phishing, spam and scam findings are always flag-only. And anything removed goes to restorable quarantine — one click puts it back in the mailbox.
How is it priced?
Per protected mailbox, per month — the mail accounts covered by your AegisBackup mail backup. The amount follows your mailbox count automatically as accounts are added or removed. There is no base fee and no commitment; discounts are handled on your invoice as a whole.
How do I activate it as an existing customer?
Log in to the portal and open Security → Security Add-ons. Security Scanning (the foundation, included at no extra cost) is activated there first with your admin's consent; AegisMailScanner is then one click away, with the price and your current mailbox count shown before you confirm anything.
